As you all know my blog is on planning your perfect wedding, but it is no secret that I am an animal lover also. So today I am doing a different blog but with good tips on how to organise an event which can have a huge impact on pets all over the UK.
Save beloved family pets from smoke inhalation
So I am what is known as a community champion in the vet world, this means I create lots of fun events for charities and the public to ensure the right care and treatment is provided for animals. Recently I had taken on a new and very rewarding event called Smokey Paws.
FACT: there are 40,000 house fires a year in the UK 47% have pets and they do die from smoke inhalation.
What is smokey paws?
Smokey paws is a NOT FOR PROFIT organisation which help to ensure the UK fire services do carry pet oxygen masks. The organisation was founded in April 2015 by couple Brian Locker and Lynn Carbeny originally from the States.
“Doesn’t every pet deserve the best chance of survival”
Why do the fire services need these mask? Well oxygen masks that are used for people are not always easy to use on animals, so the kit provides 3 sized masks from small to large to ensure all size pets have a chance at survival. These masks are used in veterinary practices during medical procedures around the UK.
The kits cost around £94 to buy. The fire services do not recieved these from the government!
So I decided to hold an open fun fundraiser at my work to help this cause, so I got in touch with the charity who passed me onto Ron Ewing. Ron is Scotlands smokey paws and Scottish fire service coordinator. I asked Ron if it would be possible to have t-shirt made which has never been done before and he granted my wish! It certainly made an impact on the day.
At the event I had organised a bake sale which helped with. Believe me if I don’t see cake for awhile I will be happy 😂.
A tombola which the prizes we had were incredible, we thought outside the box and asked local companies to donate great prizes from the restaurant SI with a voucher to Pets At Home gift card.
So then I thought ok I have some things set in place but I need more in to get people through the door. At another event I had been to there was these beautiful majestic owls, they were mostly rescued and the charity gets them out and about to educate people, I asked and they were delighted to be asked along.
Also I asked Ron if we were able to have one of the fire stations that we were donating masks to bring over a truck for people to have a look at, and so they did Dreghorn fire fighters team joined us on the day.
I am not going to lie I was stressed on the day getting organised but I had the buzz of everything that was going on and the outcome was phenominal…..
In total we had managed to raise £ 658 which allows us to allocating 7 pet oxygen masks to our surrounding area! What an achievement. So I passed the funds over to Ron who now looks at what stations require the masks more and then we will have a presentation to hand them over.
Now I am continuing to make more vet practices all over the UK to help raise funds.
Anyone can donate through the smokey paws website below
Thank you for taking time out your day to read this 😘
Bye for now. Laura
Firstly I would just like to say so sorry for not blogging or keeping in touch for awhile. Life just seemed to take over with working and planning and enjoying a wee holiday! Now I am back and relaxed it’s time to get back at it and thanks to everyone who has been asking for me I appreciate it 😘
I have found the key to a stress free wedding is being prepared and organised! I am an organised freak like I have OCD when it comes to planning anything!
Tip: Take control & make decisions together as a couple.
This has to be so easy for me and I am very lucky that my husband to be wants to be very much envolved and I know I am marrying my best friend more and more each day as we want the same things so much it’s scary!
So with 2years and 3 days to go….here is where I am…..
My wedding planning book and check list is filling up fast. I would recommend a planner it is very helpful and keeps you on track with planning, paperwork and decisions. This seems to be a very focused point for us as we look at it mostly on a weekly basis! Check out magazines for hints, tips and pictures of things you may like, remeber to use pinetrest it’s FREE. But be aware magazines cost £££.
I attended my first wedding fayre which was very helpful! I would say do your research find local FREE wedding fayres to create more ideas. What I found useful was table plans, wedding rings and just generally having fun about different ideas.
Don’t be afraid to ask regarding prices or booking appointments. This will help you to be aware of how much things cost but don’t get caught up in the moment, take a few days to research other options before deciding.
I booked a home appointment with Smooch, which is a ring company. When I met Ali the advisor I felt so at ease and comfortable with her, so making an appointment was easy there was no sales tactics at all! Ali came to our home showed us rings and gave us prices there and then, I have an amazing engagement ring so i have to keep it involved, the first ring I tried on was a band to go under my engagement ring which was suggested by Ali. It felt like a glove, the stones matched and it looked gorg! I had found my ring and so did Blair! He was looking for something rustic and different which he found. With affordable monthly payments we are able to purchase our rings and have them paid before we get married!
No more payments after the wedding!!!
Make planning fun and exciting. Use it as an excuse to go out together as a date, go shopping look at ideas and end the day with a nice meal and some drinks. Myself and Blair done this as we had a voucher from our engagement for 2 steak meals and a bottle of wine at Marco Pierre White restaurant Indigo in Glasgow. We both were buzzing it was such a nice day together and the food 😍 AMAZING!
I also used this opportunity to get a make up trial. You are probally thinking that’s too early! But it made my day even better as I felt great and I ticked the box of finding my make up artist who is incredible talented and so down to earth which made my decision easy and with a very small deposit I can book her for my big day.
Along the way we picked up our cake toppers as we wanted a specific one (which I am not giving away just yet) and our guest book which isn’t traditional but we are not traditional anyway. We looked around Paperchase as we both love stationery and found a book which matched our theme for only £3.00! This allows our guests to use our photo booth and make memories for us to keep to always remember our loved ones which attended.
Don’t let the price put you off. Don’t turn your nose up at a bargain. My bridesmaid advised me that Poundland had a wedding section, so we took a look and came out with table decorations and other bits and bobs! And spent less than £5! Always look in the sales, you never know what you could find.
You will be amazed what people can do to help or offer you and all I have done is chat with people, I met a friend of a friend who has bridesmaid dresses still new in the colour I am looking for. This is more relaxing than ordering different sizes online and not knowing what they look like so I am going to keep that in mind but I think they are perfect!
So far so good. I will keep you all posted on my next steps of planning. I hope this comes in helpful for brides to be and if anyone has anything to offer or add please feel free.
Please keep reading and following. 😘
Being your planning
Now I have booked my venue , I have 2 years to get creative and create my own magical day.
I have been really lucky myself and Blair have only visited 2 venues and fell completely in love wih the 2nd so decided to go ahead and book as it felt right. I felt the biggest pressure was finding the perfect venue now we have that everything can slowly fall into place (I hope).
There was concern over the location of our venue as it’s quite far but we decided if we put a bus on and the people that matter will come even if they make their own way there. There are always going to be buts and ifs but remember it is you as your partners day so do what feels right for yous.
Tip of the day… book your venue on a week day, it cuts the cost down hugely.
It is very overwhelming finally setting your date so some advice, take time out today i am down the beach with Blair and Mollie planning and enjoying the sun.
How do you choose your bridesmaids?
It’s simple really, all you need to think is who do I want to stand by my side when I get married? Who will keep me calm? Who will go to the ends of the earth to make sure I have a good day/hen? Who are my true friends? Pick people you know that are caring and believe me you will find out when you get engaged who your real family and friends are.
I wasn’t sure how many bridesmaids I wanted as we are not planning on having a big wedding so 2 seemed like the ideal number.
How I decided…
I picked my best friend Kim, I was bridesmaid at her wedding in 2016. We have been best friends for 4 years now after just meeting on holiday. Since then we have grown into women and living our lives and so much has changed yet we are always at the end of the phone for each other. We used to live 9hours away but now we only live 3hours away from each other so having a long distance friendship can work although I miss her like crazy!
My 2nd bridesmaid is Naomi, my fiancé sister. I don’t have any sister’s but Naomi certainly makes me feel like she is mine. She is a caring and very out going personality who I know will keep me relaxed from start to finish. Also it means so much to Blair my fiancé to have his sister a big part of the day.
Be creative when you do ask who you pick to be part of your big day. I made present boxes which was really fun as I created them from scratch.
Now I hope there is no one who is OCD like me, I went through every single detail in my head from 3am on the eve of my engagement party. I hate to think what time I will rise when it’s the wedding!
Easy 5 steps to a successful engagement party.
Step 1 – Plan ahead.
Book your party with a months notice. We panicked about finding a venue as we didn’t want to spend a huge amount of money. Budget it! Pay for the buffet/venue before the party date, that way you will not be stressing about how much money you need on the night.
Step 2 – Use gifts wisely.
We have had amazing support and family helped towards the dj and the buffet as part of their gifts to us. My aunty made our cake also, which was amazing. We appreciated that so much. You don’t need to be worrying about extra cost so enjoy the party and let family help!
I was truly lucky, my sister-in-law to be is a very taleneted hair/make up artist she was kind enough to do mine for the party and man I felt like a million dollars! I have her the ideas of the look I wanted and she really pulled it off! Again that was a help a saving of £50 I can’t thank her enough. So let people offer to help. Also you get extra time with that special person, which I needed as I thought I would of been a nervous wreck but I was the opposite for once.
Step 3 – Start your prep a few days before.
What I mean by this is don’t be running about at the last minute getting ready! Get your hair cut the week before and do your tan 2 days before If you moisturise it will last.
I put everything I needed into a bag so when it was time to get ready it was there.
Step 4 – Finalise everything
Get up early and go decorate your hall, that means you have time for an afternoon nap to refresh!
Step 5 – Relax and enjoy every minute of it!
We can’t thank our family and friends enough for a great night and they spoiled us to. I couldn’t of hoped for a better engagement I have had an amazing experience. Love to everyone 💋
Today I got the great pleasure of getting to go lambing for the first time every at my bosses farm. From herding sheep to bringing in horses it was one of the best days of my life that I will cherish forever! This little cutie is Rodger who we got to bottle feed as he is very small but adorable 😍 think he stole all our hearts today!
Some people might cringe at the thought but I should have been born on a farm and I’m sad I wasn’t! I helped a mummy give birth to twins for the first time and seeing them eating and standing healthily warmed my heart.
Once the lambs and mums were able to go outside we took the quad down to the field and let them go to enjoy the fresh air then I got to drive the quad 😁 what a feeling! With the collie sitting on the back I felt in my element.
On break times we got spoiled with cakes and tea.Yummy!
My advice would be if you ever get the chance to experience this do it!!! I also got to do it with 2 amazing friends who made the day even better that is a memory that will remain for ever.
Bed time for me as I’m full of the cold and knackered but here’s hoping I sleep tonight and I am one happy person!
Bought a new toy for Poppy was only £6 at pets at home. Already she loves it and I am only in the door 5 mins!
Love giving them little treats. Companion goes both ways between an owner and a pet. They are not just an animal they are part of the family. I don’t have children so they are my furbabies.
Everyone always jokes at my mum saying ” you getting the grandchild this weekend?” They are talking about Mollie my dog! I will do another blog on that another time though.
Bye for now 💋
